10 years (2000-2010) serving in the U.S. Army, half of it spent overseas, including 3 tours in Iraq. Mostly did my thing as a 44E machinist, but also a stint as unit armorer, and 50 cal. gunner for one tour in Iraq. I miss it, but felt it took me away from my family too much.

Things done for you that were not earned or necessiarily deserved, these are gifts to citizens of many countries. Motivation to serve comes from many places, and I have much to be grateful for.

17 years British Army. Left early when I became a single parent (found it was all about priorities). Left as a substantive Warrant Officer class II so quite chuffed with what I managed to achieve. Went through some good, and went through some bad but still hold it all close to my heart, it's not something you can just chuck in the bin.

Ran away from step-father and with older womans signature joined the US Navy. During boot camp at Great Lakes I was invited to join the medical corps. During school they asked for volunteers to serve with Marines. No mention of getting shot at just being part of a Marine unit. Sounded like fun until reporting for training alongside them. Then in 1965 became one of the first units to hit the beach around Danang. And then the fun began.
I wear Leatherneck tartan because I will alway identify as "DOC." Proudest title other than Dad I have ever had.
