odd pleating in Royal Stewart kilt

It's hardly a pathetic attempt at pleating, it looks well worked out and balanced, it obviously is not to your taste, and perhaps I wouldn't have choosen it either, but it's perfectly reasonable, so I don't think you should be making fun of it.
Perhaps the idea of just horizontal bands wasn't favoured , we don't know anything much about it, it might be unusual but it isn't actually "wrong" either just different.

I don't mind the white stripes, but the extra dark stripe would just annoy me to death - I once took a whole jersey apart when I noticed three wrong stitches after it was finished.

The middle two white stripes are in the right position for a slimming effect - like the seams on panel skirts - but it isn't something I'll be adding to my kilt making options - at least - I don't think so.
