Have you considered taking up the bagpipes.

2am is a good time to practice... in the street.

Sin2001, first let me join in the general feeling of "shock" being expressed by the Rabble: this sort of 'group assault' is deplorable and that it should occur in the 21st century over a man's garment is frankly amazing and disturbing. Secondly, I commend you on handling the event with such self-control, because I think I'd have lost my temper at the inference that I was "turning my son gay"! And lastly, may I compliment your son's excellent humor and sensible approach to this event. His comment of "popping off their heads and be on our way" made me smile! Well done, to both of you! You're obviously raising your son correctly if he has such a level-headed approach to such a confrontation.

I must agree with other opinions expressed here: this could easily be interpreted as intimidation and the police should at least be contacted and informed, even if (at this point) you don't seek to press charges. That way, if there is a repeated offense, you could have your son call the cops while you delay the mob at your front door. In the meantime, I would definitely engage the press! A mention in either the local paper or on the local news of "mob accosts father and son about wearing ancestral clothing" may shame those involved, while at the same time giving a wide audience a bit of education about the Scottish national dress.

Please keep us informed, Sin2001, and know that you have the support of the Rabble!

Wrap a tunic or sheet around the boys like a play tunic, add a cape and a toy light saber and they would say "Oh how cute they are playing star wars"

Put on a historical based kilt on the lad and they cant see through their prejudice. Perhaps the lad should get his friend to kilt up and give them some broad swords and dirks.. a bit of blue paint on the face too... Maybe the goons might take a different attitude....

Though why should we have to use weapons to justify ourselves, it should be enough that your lad is proud of his heritage... If the people are Mormons they should take a deep look back at theirs.

I live in Kaysville Utah which is right in-between Layton and Farmington where sin2001 and Gael Ridire live. I wear my kilts all the time, in fact I haven’t had a pair of pants or shorts on for over two weeks now. I am seen by hundreds of people every day dressed in a kilt and I have NEVER had a negative experience. My point is, these narrow minded neighbors are a small minority. I think for the most part Utah Mormons are pretty good people. I love the conservative nature and the strong family values I find here. I feel the only way your neighbors will change is for all of us to set the example by wearing our kilts and showing them we are just the same as they are, except we wear kilts.

Road Trip??? Not so far....but sorry, no way on the Campbell tartan....

Been stewing about this insanity - once as a youngster was a police officer trained in crowd control and now as a geezer know group dynamics...from your description sure sounds like there was some "mob psychology" going on...like what happens when a group of people becomes "something else" from who they normally are - usually based on fear...."He's not like US!"

Urge you to make a police report just so your local police know it happened and have a clue - 'cause otherwise I don't think they'd believe it. And the newspaper might appreciate the story too - including how another mob of kilties is poised to invade your neighborhood and support you. Show this mob so many kilts they won't think them unusual anymore.

And also had an awareness at how much this seemed like what happens when our employers or school principals sit us down and tell us we can't wear kilts for some bizarre reason that is only based in their need for power and control.

A gentleman in California contacted his Clan association who supplied an attorney to help him when confronted for wearing kilts to his job at his University. Perhaps your Clan Campbell association would with to get involved with legal suggestions.

    Stand proud!

The problem is, you can educate ignorance (the condition of being uneducated, unaware, or uninformed) but you can't educate stupid (lacking in normal intelligence, perception or common sense) and anyone who thinks wearing a Kilt is an indication of sexual orientation is clearly a bit stupid... People will only change if they want to change, it sounds as though this baying bunch are quite happy with their stupidity and attempts to intimidate others into their warped perception of things. Their wall is already built and attempting to reason with such people is a waste of breath.

I personally would have my Kilt on everyday from now on. Just to show I give less than two flying figs what they think!!

Call the Police if the harassment continues.
