Congratulations! I hope all goes well with your kilt experience at work.

After just more than a year of kilt wearing one or two days a week at work, I was informed that kilts are in violation of the dress code. They are not specifically addressed, but shorts are, and they are prohibited, and some genius has decided that "kilt = shorts". Sounds like Supreme Court logic to me. I suspect that the "question" arose when someone complained. They could have just said "We run the place, and we don't want you to wear kilts." Instead, they come up with this asinine "logic".

Again - Congrats! Wear the kilt well, and proud!

I'm sorry to hear they have decided the kilt is in violation of the dress code. I'm still debating if or how much I want to fight it if a similar decision is made in my case.

Great to hear that the new supervisor is ok with you wearing your kilt to work. I wore my kilts to work most of last year and the principal had no problem with that (I'm a High School English Teacher). We have a new Principal this year and will find out what he thinks in a couple of weeks. I started off wearing the kilt on Fridays (dress down days) and progressed to full time during the second semester. Nothing but compliments the entire time and the students, even the Latinos, loved it. Good for you!

As I said, it is their railroad. I work for them, and they make the rules. I have absolutely no respect for whomever it is that couldn't tell me face-to-face their determination of what my wardrobe would be, and relied on this absurd "kilt = shorts" interpretation to shift accountability to the dress code. My immediate boss was not happy that she had to relay the message to me from above.

Just remember that the job is the important thing. Your attire is only a part of the picture. Consider what a dispute over the subject might do to your professional reputation, your credibility, and your financial security, then decide if it is worth it to do battle - and, perhaps, to die - on Mt. Kilt.
