    ebay head-scratcher

We've all seen stuff on Ebay incorrectly described, such as antique women's purses listed as sporrans, civilian stuff listed as military, and so on.

Every now and then seemingly clueless bidders will raise the price of dodgy stuff far above the value it would have to informed buyers.

I don't know what to make of this listing. This supposed Scottish outfit isn't "real" at all... the kilt, Glengarry, sporran, etc are all made wrong and the whole thing looks like a cheaply made theatrical costume. But, people have pushed the bidding well in excess of $300. Why? I wonder.

Anchor buttons?? Looks to me like a costume from someone's high school production of Brigadoon.

    Yeah, it happens.

A few years ago an unsigned, 3rd edition bushcraft book by Ray Mears went for about £370 IIRC, and WHSmiths were selling signed copies for only £17.99.

Somepeople just get bidding fever and totally disengage their brains...

That's what I'm thinking, although the 1930s would be too early for Brigadoon. It's possible that this is indeed from the 1930s (or some other decade, but still 'vintage'), yet is not Scottish at all. It looks like a costume.

I'm thoroughly confused by ebay... 8 yard wool kilts for less than 1/2 price ($200) don't sell, but THAT outfit / costume gets $350? I give up.

    +2

Yes lovely handsewn 8-yard kilts, vintage or ex-hire, go for little, lovely vintage sporrans go for under $50, and this tatty costume goes for $350. Crazy.
