A kilt is just as warm as pants if you are sitting having dinner. It's when you are moving around and letting in new air into the kilt that is starts to get cold. Things like standing in a line for a long time, where you can't help but keep moving, but are not doing anything to make your body warm like dancing.
A dinner and a show should be fine.
