Learn something new every day. Gotta love diversity...so no "Best Knees" contest after the potluck...whoever could have guessed that knees could be offensive...

Perhaps an ankle-length kilt is needed - another advantage of the great kilt ... just pull one layer down to the ankles

Don't feel badly, Gents. It's across the board for both sexes. No knees or bare shoulders.
Why would anyone want to drink vodka when you can drink Whisky?

I don't know their official rules, or if it's considered "offensive", but I read somewhere that most Orthodox churches (especially overseas, not necessarily here in the US) are pretty conservative when it comes to standards of dress. It's actually kind of interesting that Western society takes such a casual approach to certain body parts being exposed, where other parts of the world find it incredibly offensive, or at least frown on it. Especially considering our own history as recently as a century or two ago, where we had much the same cultural taboos that were very similar (Scots excluded, of course).

I was in Cannes today and was invited to join another Scottish dancing group; the second in 24 hours. I'd give my eye teeth to join one in Norn Iron where I live!
A beautiful part of the world to visit.
Thank you Tobus for your insight into the Russian church.

John, I'm wondering if the Russian Orthodox leadership is sensitive about non-trousers because of Exodus 28:39-43? I have a short article on this in case anybody is interested. GC

If you ever travel to Bali and wish to visit a Hindu temple, and you are showing any part of the part of the leg above the lower shin you will be given a sarong and a special cloth belt to wear (male or female) It has nothing to do about what type of clothing you are wearing, it's the exposure of flesh in a holy place. Shoulders and the and upper arms usually must be covered too. I would imagine that other churches around the world would have similar rules regarding modesty of dress in the church

It's too bad that you weren't able to get into the church. It really is quite lovely with some amazing icons. Enjoy the Cote d'Azur!

Most do have "rules", or at least expectations, but they can awfully tricky to enforce. Plus, the overall trend (that I've seen) is that most people dress much more casually, and often more skin-showingly, than they did in times past.
