Sorry, I can't read the dimensions. Any chance of a solo picture?

Just right-click on the photo in question, "save as" to your desktop or whatever, then use the zoom function in your photo viewer and the measurements are legible.

Tobus, I love the tartan lining idea! Hope it turns out well for you.

Here are the dimensions of the one I'm working on. Again, I'm still not sure if this will end up being too large and looking silly. I've actually got the bag done; I just need to do the work to get the cantle mounted and the tassels installed.

I typically use a 3/16" seam allowance as well as a 3/16" spacing on my stitch holes.

Thank you Tobus for the picture with the measurements , I am guessing with you posting this , you dont mind if we copy this pattern and use it right . Just want to make sure you are cool with it .

-- By the way I love your tartan liner idea and will most likely try it too .
Thank you again , good job

I wouldn't have posted it if I were trying to be secretive about the pattern. It's not like I'm making these for commercial sale and need to protect a business interest. I just feel that I should reiterate that this particular pattern isn't 'proven' yet! But it's not really rocket science. Just looking at photos and examples of sporran types out there in the world, you can sketch a pattern based on some pretty basic guesswork. And then it's pretty easy to experiment a little and develop a pattern that will work, then tweak it from there on the next build. Trial and error is all it is, and this pattern is just another step in that process.

I actually wish more DIYers would post info about their patterns and technical information about their builds. I can understand why some folks would want to protect their patterns so that others won't be copying them left and right, but I honestly don't think this is a big enough community of DIY sporran builders to have to worry about that. Those who want Artificer-level quality will go to a quality maker for it, because what makes for a beautiful sporran isn't necessarily the pattern. It's the craftsmanship like Artificer provides that makes the difference.

I realised that I never updated this thread with photos of the finished sporran that I provided measurements for earlier. I haven't gotten around to taking photos of it for its own sake, but here is a photo from the recent Salado Highland Games, taken by Shaun Maxwell's wife (that's Shaun standing next to me). You can see the size and proportion of the finished sporran, although I'm wearing it a bit low here. That was the maiden voyage of this sporran, and the strap had stretched a bit since I used a very thin, soft leather to make it. I should be wearing it higher up like I do with my black sporran, also shown earlier in this thread.

At any rate, this photo shows the size difference between mine and the more traditional size like Shaun is wearing. My initial fears that my sporran would be too large seem unfounded, though, and I'm happy with the final finished size and proportion of it.

Wow! It looks, great, Tobus. Thank you for sharing and also for posting the patteern.

If you don't mind me asking, how did you make the leather cantle on the first sporran? I would like to try my hand at making a similar one.

The leather cantle was just a flat three-part braid, laid onto a backing piece that was made to fit the shape of the sporran and held with cement, then the assembly was hand-stitched to the sporran.

This post has emboldened me regarding my own DIY sporran that's about this big. I feared it was too large and some others on the forum confirmed those fears. Now I'm reconsidering. The extra size is really handy.
