I thought about having another strap/belt made in that style for a fur sporran that I bought, but I could not find anyone locally to make it, and then I found a braided belt that I liked. I think a little tooling on a sporran belt would be very nice.
    Lyle,
I think that flyrod was talking about KILT straps and you're confusing that with SPORRAN straps/belt.

I like your belt Brad; outstanding craftmanship. I think brown was a great choice for color and it sets off the design nicely.

I really find your sporran strap interesting. Did you make it or purchase it separately (or did it come with the sporran)? I like the fastening system; it won't scratch the leather seat in my car like the buckle on my sporran belt does.

The sporran strap/belt that you are referring to, is Fergusson Britt's standard strap that comes with his sporrans, which can be ordered thru the Scottish Tartans Museum (see box of XMarks partners at top of page)

Yes, it's a Ferguson Britt sporran strap. I selfishly declare my intent to shamelessly rip off the design for any future sporran straps I feel compelled to make! Awesome design; nothing is as versatile.

Yes, I was speaking of kilt straps versus a sporran strap, but now that I think about it....why not a tooled sporran strap? I may just do that for an upcoming project. I love the look of tooled leather, so I may give it a shot. As my da says: "Nothing ventured, nothing gained."

Thanks to the rabble for all of the wonderful comments. You guys put a smile on my face. And Tobus: more pics will be forthcoming.

    Regards,

    Brad

I've been wanting to do the same thing (well, actually, have my wife do it, since she's the master leather tooler). But every time I mention it to her, she rolls her eyes and says that a sporran strap is just too narrow to do any decent tooling on. It's OK for some basic border stamping (like a row of shell stamps) along the edges, but actual tooling would be difficult. If it's about 3/4" wide to begin with, and you have to leave a border on it, you're only left with a very narrow strip to work on. And on a narrow piece like that, you'll get distortion from the stamping.

This isn't to say it can't be done. But she just doesn't think it's worth messing with. So I continue to walk around with an unadorned sporran strap, lol.

I believe you are correct. A different kilt strap would be interesting.
