Cape Cod Weekend

Two weekends ago we had a mini-vacation. My wife has been in the United Stats for four years and has wanted to go to Cape Cod. Time and money have been limiting factors. Her daughter is visiting from Guatemala and we are making an effort to do and see interesting things. Autumn is a wonderful time here in New England and the Tourist flow ebbs in places like the Cape so I suggested we take two days, starting early on Saturday, that we camp in a state park and that we enjoy a place we would otherwise spend most of our time in traffic seeing.

This is only a small part of what we did and a smaller part of what might be seen on Cape Cod if we took more time. It was great!

Saturday we got up early, drove in light traffic to the Cape – two and one-half hours anyway – and peeked in on some small towns on the bay side. Mid-day we pitched camp, ate our prepared lunches and headed for the National Seashore. We visited Nausett Beach with its beautiful lighthouse – one of many on the Cape.



We walked the beach – first I just wandered practicing my piping while the ladies poked around. Lots of people remarked they liked it, two said it was really special as they had lost loved ones with Irish backgrounds, and many commented that there was a seal that was staying in the immediate area and looking at me, apparently listening. I played for that seal until my lips couldn’t hold out.

My wife and her daughter joined me there on the beach.



Then my step-daughter and I tried out the panorama option on the camera to try to get two of me in one shot. It took a lot of tries and people smiled as I dashed from one side to the other to be in the shot twice.



From there we drove on to other spots, bought some Kielbasa and chips and cooked it over the fire at our camp.



Next morning we broke camp under damp skies and headed off. We visited the Highland Lighthouse. It was amazing and well worth the $4 entry fee.





We went on down to the end of the Cape to Provincetown and Race Point. The Pilgrim Monument is a wonder. We climbed it – it is over 250 feet high.





At the top the wind was howling! We walked around and saw the town from the different views. I was wearing my reproduction Gordon Highlander kilt – 22oz and very heavy. I thought we were going to have a Marilyn Monroe moment!



Provincetown was beautiful to see from up there. We brought our own binoculars. That was a worthwhile thing to remember!

We went and had lunch in a little out-of-the-way local place that wasn’t too pricy and then out to Race Point Beach – the end of it all!





We went back into Provincetown to look around and had a great time, did not get a parking ticket, and were tired and happy when we finished.

It is nice to see so much with so little bother from crowds. We are already talking about an early Spring trip back to see more of what we missed. We might take three days this time.

New England is one place I'd like to visit. It must be beautiful. That tower reminds me of the Wallace monument in Stirling, about the same height and views must be just as stunning (I visited there once in beautiful winter sunshine and I could see from the Bass Rock (south of Edinburgh) to my left, to Ben More (in The Highlands) to my right. BTW if that's a WPG Gordon kilt you're wearing it would take an offy strong wind to blaw that sucker up!

Lovely pics. The Cape is a fantastic place to visit in the Fall. Looks like you had a great time! Thanks for sharing the photos. I used to camp with my family at North of Highland Campground in Truro many, many years ago - wonderful memories.
