First sporran project

All the front stitching is done. Decided it was better without tassels. Added the gusset and top band. Then stabilized the whole by adding a thicker piece of leather to the back. Will make for a nice smooth interior too.



Next step is adding the studs.

What did you use to make those nicely scalloped edges?

Nice! I'd like to have a go. My neighbours have a leather sofa that I was eyeing up for sporran making material last time I visited. Unfortunately they were sitting on it at the time so it would have been a bit impudent to attack it with scissors right there and then.

Can you mask the dings with Kiwi tan? (other shoe polishes are available)

What did you use to make those nicely scalloped edges?

Again, the edge was the child of invention, and a sorely lacking tool box for leather craft. I used to have a pair of pinking shears, but who knows what happened to them, so instead used my leather hole punch. Got the idea from perforated stamps. Drew out my shape on the back side, then measured careful 1/4 spacing and used the hole punch to create the row of "perfs" and cut out as normal. I actually rather like it because it is a little different.

Can you mask the dings with Kiwi tan?

I tried that with some success, even blended in a tiny bit of brown. It helped. One thing that I am finding, the more I work on it, the more it is feeling rather antique partly due to using a used leather. Nearly done with is so will post up the final product in a day or two.

My new "Prince Charles" adapted sporran is done. Put the last touches on it this morning.



By the time I was finished, the imperfections in the leather kind of grew on me. It does add a sort of antique feeling overall. Learned a lot and will probably try my hand at it again, but first have to finish my partner's kilt for Christmas.

Careful, it's addictive. With each successive one your technique will improve a little bit and you'll push your abilities a little farther. As for the battle scars, they just add character and you'll probably add a few more as it hangs on your belt. Wear it with pride.
