Since you mentioned going into production, wouldn't you have trouble getting such small pieces of tartan if it were a rare one, or would you just limit the choices?

You do make a good point... So- the ones we're producing aren't going to have tartan. This was a prototype, and was made especially for my wife. The ones we're planning on putting into production will have a red and gold brocade in place of the tartan. We raided a fabric store up the street and found a couple nice bolts.
