If you want to avoid getting bored doing garter ties, buy a Brother knitting machine and garter carriage, cast on the yarn, set the garter carriage for however many rows you want knitted, wander off and return some time later to cast off the tie.

You just need to move the levers into the cast on and cast off positions, not actually do any knitting.
