Another possibility is using a leather camera belt pouch, or some of the renaissance-style belt pouches.

If it's just the sgian inside the waistband or on the belt and you're handy with leather, knife suppliers have retention clips designed for folding knives that could easily be attached to the sheath.

Ken, Looking good guy! I ordered the large pouch only. Will hold my tobacco pouch lighter and long body Kirsten Lancer pipe (6"). without a fret. Is also long enough to contain the sgian-dubh in a pinch. I think with the double straps it will have to ride behind the hip bone on my bony behind. About like you have it. I like the USAK Rob Roy sporrans but they look odd when over stuffed with wallet, tobacco pouch, pipe etc. Usually have ashes in it too by the end of the day. This will save sporran and wallet from that.

PodKiDo, this lg pouch is 5.5 x 7.5 x 2.25 inches - about flask sized? and out of sight should you not want to share.

Pants is only a present tense verb here. I once panted, but it's all cool now.

PodKiDo, Since I feel like I understood your question, I'd say that carrying such a thing inside the kilt waistband would be OK as long as it was not too big. I'll qualify myself a little by saying I'm not a fan of inside the waistband pouches with trousers either, but I've carried some fairly small items, around 3/4 of an inch thick with built in clips, with no issues. But personally, and it depends on your build, I think I'd find things larger than that uncomfortable, and they would likely ruin the fit and/or look of a trad kilt. I think I'd just come up as small a flask etc. as you can find, or a way to carry them either in the sporran or outside the waistband. One issue with outside is that it might be hard to find a variety of carriers that will fit a traditional kilt belt. as regards to the sizing of the kilt, I don't think I'd order it big just for that, there is usually enough adjustment in the straps.

I would not adjust the measurement when ordering.
Thank you. That is the information I need.

CDNSushi - I meant sgian achlais, I'm new to all this
tundramanq - I can still wear mine high waisted. It's a visual thing not sharing and it's only water anyway.
unixken - I'll look into the pipers pouch and a bottle holder, but I'm trying to keep a cleaner appearance.
Chas - Transverse is a good idea.
MNlad - Also good ideas but as before, I want to try and keep exterior accessories to a minimum.
Zardoz - Thank you for confirming that the kilt adjustability will solve my dilemma. I was hoping this was the case so I could wear it sans pouch.

PodKiDo - I agree that the 1/3rds proportions is the best kilted look. I am stuck on the hips due to a botched surgery abdominal muscle closing that blew out about 5 months later and was repaired with a Dacron mesh sewn into the closing that left the suture ends sticking out. This extends 3 inches up and down from my navel. When I try to wear something snug over the area, the suture ends try to poke holes in my skin from the inside out. Not comfy I find I would rather accommodate this than to let the cutters at me again and remove the sutures.

I seem to need to bring this up occasionally when people start thinking this is a fashion choice. Kilts because the waist and belt move with your waist as pants can not.

Sorry to hear that Chuck. Fortunately you have adapted and can still wear a kilt. I've met men who had to wear something akin to a dress because nothing wrapped around the waist was tolerable.

No problems now guy, the kilt solves it. Good thing is I put my reasoning behind kilts and the hip wearing in my profile - finally - should have long ago. Sometimes I need goading and prodding to figure out a solution.
    Cheers Chuck

I must make do with my avatar. Although she lacks some in fashion sense.
