I am aware that sgians are fixed blades.
I was wondering if anyone else might carry a folder down there on occasion. I never carry any knives so I'm a bit rusty on that point.
Over-thinking point taken.

One point that is often forgotten about sgian dubhs is the shape. So often the sgian is exquisite, the workmanship is of the highest quality, using only the finest materials and it has a a provable historical vintage.
But, if you put in in your hose, the disaster begins. You take five paces and it slides down till it jams between your ankle bone and your shoe. The next pace trips you up and you spend the rest of the night hobbling round saying "Yes, Mr Dillon".
The only way you are going to know is to wear it for a day. If it sits happily under your garter, great. If it starts wandering round, it is trying to tell you that it belongs in your sporran.

Chas

Please do not feel like you HAVE to have a sgian dubh in your sock. If you are camping in your kilt, just keep it handy... if your sock is handy, then put it there. But if you just want it to "complete the look"....

On the wandering SD, mine doesn't move for two reasons.
First the sheath has the points on it that are put there for just this purpose.
They dig into the hose and hold it quite well.
The second is I wear compression hose that are a lot tighter.

Maybe a sheath with points for your pocket knife?

Pants is only a present tense verb here. I once panted, but it's all cool now.

What you need is called an officer's sgian. Look at this thread:

Excellent! Thanks, Geoff!
Please understand, I normally do not wear a sgian out of choice. I also know that plenty of kilties do not wear one.

I really hope you're not wearing decent compression hose and tucking your sgian dubh into them. That would actually destroy the differential compression that a compression sock provides and can do long term damage to your varicose veins.
(Sorry, the vascular surgeon in me just came out on that one).

I wear a few things in my hose as I tend to like to have something that's as usefull as a sgian, but slightly more multitaskable.
my go to sgian http://www.gerbergear.com/Tactical/K...-Back-up_45803
Also often tuck in one of these http://www.gerbergear.com/Tactical/T...lack_31-001134
I'm all for the sleek look of a traditional sgian, but I am also a utilitarian at heart and if I can't find at least 4 or more uses for something I likely won't carry it. Multitools may now look as pretty but there are some very sleek models on the market that fit nicely in the hose and at thte very least are great conversation starters.
