I hope it's not wool tartan underwear you are talking about!
Anyway, when sitting kilted, I'm generally sitting on my kilt; therefore I'm more interested in protecting my kilt. Most pub stools, I'm sure, would only have had pants on them anyway. Though many kilt wearers don't see it this way, I would rather have a buffer zone, if you will, between me and my kilt to protect it from... stuff like sweat, drippies, etc. ... you know what I mean.
Generally, what's under the kilt is not seen so, who cares if what's under there matches or not unless, of course, your doing the Hamish or your giving the lassies a show.
