Personally, I think if you don't have a black Argyll, that should come before a PC. It is much more versatile and usually more appropriate.

a black Barathea Argyll can be worn:
without a waistcoat with a straight tie for "business dress"
with a 5 button waistcoat and straight tie for same
with a 3 button waistcoat and bow tie for black tie.
with a tartan waistcoat and bow tie for same
It's loads more versatile than a PC, which should really only be worn for black tie events.
