I re-read it.
"Sir, would you like a side of tartan bloomers with your order?"

How about that.

Yes, Jock gives the impression that they were a "side order" whereas they were standard issue. i.e. TCHD and TMHD!

Ti be perfectly honest, they are probably a good idea to cover the modesty area of kilt wearing on windy days. Sometimes no matter what you do the pleats seem to want to fly away, even with heavier wool.
I would love a pair with my next kilt. Novety? Yes. Practical? Yes.

Bren,
Comfortable? No. Hygienic? No. Expensive? Yes
So they died out!

Ok it seems that the "nice touch" comment was lost on the readers, for that I am sorry. What I meant was, far from being a side order they were not ordered at all! They arrived with the kilt as a gesture from the kilt maker. No doubt the customer in reality paid as the price of the "extras" was built into the cost of the kilt, but a "nice touch"(gesture) nontheless.

I typically wear hose and shoes under my kilt.

Okay, this might be a bit in the "too much information" category but my wife prefers thinking of me as "commando" but I usually wear black briefs or what my grandson says are "really old man's underwear" (Brooks Brothers button down boxers) when out-and-about (not at home). Even when commando at home I usually wear an "underkilt" (black cotton "slip") to keep the kilt (and me) "hygienic."

Well, this is probably a much over-looked response, but what i wear underneath my kilt depends upon where I am wearing the kilt! When I am out in the back country, I wear nothing; when I am busking around town on a non-windy day, I wear nothing; when I am at a quiet night at the pub, I wear nothing; when I go to a public function, or to a church gig, or to a sporting event - I wear boxers. Just pick your location, and plan appropriately!
