If you can, take a ferry across the Irish Sea to the west coast of Scotland and explore Argyll. It's worth the trip!
Enjoy and safe travels,

Quick background - I am half Scots and half Irish. My Father lives in Belfast, his family live in the south and I live in Glasgow. I also lived in Dublin and Donegal in the past.
I could only afford ex-hire kilts as a youngster so I have worn various tartans in Ireland on both sides of the border and never had any problems. Bear in mind that Scottish Rugby and Football fans travel to Ireland fairly frequently wearing kilts so although it is not everyday, they are quite used to it - particularly in the north where they are a common sight at weddings what with the close ties to the west of Scotland.
It might be surprising if someone in the south recognised your tartan but in my opinion it's highly unlikely they would take offence even if they did
