What a excellent hike with pub ending, thats my kind of hike. Thanks for the photos w/ commentary. Have to ask, how did the home bound trek go?

Derek: What a wonderful place to live, walk, ... and drink ale. I love that big old tree by the stone fence. What kind is it - an oak of some sort? Thanks for sharing your walk with us.

TJK ... we got the little hopper bus back from the village to Merthyr and then the main bus home from there. Only takes an hour or so to get home.
Moonkien ... Im afraid I am not any good with trees ... I only know an apple tree n a willow tree .. thats about it. Heres a closer shot of the tree in question if anyone can help out ...

Should have put this one up ... the bar staff are very pretty, very friendly and very helpful and have no probs with cilts/kilts ...

I cannot see the leaves or bark clearly, but my slightly educated guess would say that the tree is a magnificent example of a sycamore.

Still not that clear, but they look like sycamore leaves to me. So I am moderately sure we are looking at a sycamore tree.

Actually I am "down South". Funnily enough I was going to suggest a possible meet up at said pub. I am tied up this week, but how are you fixed up for next week? I will meet you there. Can you let me know the village and with a bit of luck I might remember the area and how to get there.

Splendid. Presumably the Wye Valley Brewery is local to the pub? My friend's parents have just moved to the area and he was telling me that the ale is rather splendid. As luck would have it I am going to take the long trip south in a few weekend's time to visit some chumrades in Cheltenham... and we have ordered a polypin of the HPA to work through... it is a tough job but someone has to do it!

Derek and Jock: Thanks. From what little I can gather viewing pictures on the net, that tree looks a whole lot like a sycamore. Oaks don't share the same order, family, genus, and species. In any case it is a magnificent specimen.

Now, speaking of magnificent specimens, if I can just find the order, family, genus, species, and email address of that cute bartender, my biological research will be complete for the day.
