How to wear a "half belted plaid"

I've been looking at the STM's half belted plaids and old pics of highland dress and the question came to me "how would I wear a plaid like that now? I tend to wear a velvet sheriffmuir for black tie( OTT I know) and how would I wear a plaid like this with a vest/waistcoat?

Note: I have 3 black tie and one white tie event that I attend every year and I usually find 1 or 2 more to go to.

    Andy.

I actually sold the half-belted plaid I had because I found myself not wearing it all that often. I just found it too cumbersome. But if one is going to wear a plaid, I still much prefer it to the fly plaid. It really does mimic the look of the old belted plaid much better than the fly plaid does.

Here is a photo of me wearing it with formal wear.

Of course this is an Argyle jacket, not a Sheriffmuir. I don't think I ever got around to wearing mine with my Sheriffmuir doublet. But the only issue I had to contend with was the length of the jacket. You may encounter the same with your Sheriffmuir. Given the length of the doublet in the back, you don't want to pull the plaid up too much, or else the plaid will bunch up the bottom of the jacket. Just be sure to allow ample slack in the plaid when you bring it up to your shoulder so as to give room for the jacket/doublet.

I like to wear mine when I play the 'pipes for funerals or weddings or whatever, unless the weather's too hot. I think it would work fine for formal attire.

In the privacy of your own bedroom is probably the safest ...

So when did they come up with the name "half belted plaid"? And what is it?

Belted plaids (no, not the Great Kilt kind, a plaid that has a cloth belt that goes around your waist) have been around for 200 years, and recently we have "fly plaids" that just hang there.

On the occasion I have to want to wear something that looks like a great kilt, I just wear a great kilt. The only problem I have is the whole jacket length thing mentioned above.

That's the thing I don't want to wear a Great kilt(the whole pillow butt thing) but I like that " classic " look. I like "old school " style but contemporary fashion. Think of Jock Scot saying that looks good but...... I have the events to go to, I have attended them kilted,I am looking to round out my formal dress( white and black tie ) with something in a classic style but not so cumbersome. Is this it?

I've never worn a half belted plaid, so I can't say whether or not is less bulky than a great kilt. To me it looks as though it would be just about the same bulk. Something that helps to fight the pillow butt look it to wear two belts instead of one. I'll do some digging because I know that there is a thread on here that talks about that. The top belt makes things lay nicer while the bottom one holds the thing on. But if all you are going for is the look, and that only on occasion, then the half belted might be the way to go. I just happen to own a couple of great kilts so the idea of buying a garment to emulate the look of one seems redundant to me. But if you don't, the plaid might be the more economic thing.
