599th Anniversary of the Battle of Bannockburn

Well, Sean Rafferty on BBC3 just reminded me that today is the anniversary of the Battle of Bannockburn. I think that I may have to change at lunch time into my Heritage of Scotland kilt. (as if I really need an excuse.)

What about you? Will you kilt up today?

(he also opened the show with the Pipes and Drums an Regimental Band of the RRoS (I think it was ...playing the Black Bear and Highland Laddie, if you'd like to catch it on the interweb.)

I wonder how many in Scotland know the significance of todays date? Me? I never gave it a thought.

I only celebrate the 25, 50, 75 and 00 of battles. Next year should be interesting what with the referendum too just a few months later.

Tried the same with the wedding anniversary but the wife wan't having it

I think it might have something to do with the attendance at the original event

Just had to check my maths. 1314 to 2013 is 699 years isn't it?

And a little historical add on to the already very important date (24. June).
The battle of Solferino (24. June 1859) is said to be the last battle where the sovereigns actually commanded their troops in battle and it was the place and time from where Henri Dunant started a campaign that led to the geneva convention and to the International Red Cross.

So next year we (not moggi1964) can not only celebrate 700 years since a significant victory in Scottish history but also 155 years for humanity.

Not sure on which calendar it is on, but I'm hoping to find a group to portray the Scots for next year since my troop does the English side. I wouldn't mind being killed by the Bruce. I mean if you got to lose, you may as well lose by getting killed by a king.
