Do you think the cantle could be used for a sporran? I didn't read dimensions on this one but at flea markets, I am always looking for "Cantle type" objects.

    It's 6 x 8 inch don't know if that is big enough.

I see these vintage purses being hawked as sporrans all the time on Ebay.

I wouldn't use the top for a sporran, because you'd end up with a sporran that looks like a vintage purse! Sporran cantles and these purses look distinctly different.

And it doesn't really look very Scottish (or Celtic for that matter).

You are correct. The name comes from the 'utility belt' that would be worn by same.

She would have a small scissors, a tiny keeper or purse for coins/ etc, possibly a key keeper, and other small implements on chains, all which would be attached to a hook for her belt/waistband.

Well that's good to know. Considering the way the thing functions, I'd not want to be calling my wife a ... "hooker."

Hahahaha! You just made my 32nd birthday even better, Father Bill (as I wipe hot tea off of my desktop monitor)!

Happy Birthday and I hope you get a nice hankerchief as a present

What we call "chatelaine" here is actually short for "chaine chatelaine".
The lady (chatelaine) and the lord (chatelain) of the house somehow both got a chatelaine.
And I just read that it once was a belt and only later developped into those fancy hooked things.
