I love the Astérix series. I have the complete collection of the Uderzo and Goscinny books in the original French and have reread them so many times that some are falling apart. I even published an article on translating the Astérix stories about 20 years ago. I stopped collecting them after Goscinny passed away, though. The sparkling and often very subtle verbal wit that marked his writing was just not there in the stories written by Uderzo alone, although, of course, the graphics remained superb. Indeed, most of Goscinny's verbal play was lost in the various translated versions, which were often not particularly well done. I'll be interested to see what has happened to the characters and the writing with this new team. Uderzo and Goscinny were a brilliant team and are a particularly tough act to follow.
