Any of the three choices would be great. However, were it my choice to make for my own first kilt, I'd go with a universal tartan. In fact, I just realized that of all the kilts I own -- three of which are in tartans "belonging to" my ancestral clan -- the kilt I wear the most is in the California state tartan.

I'm with Dale on this. I have kilts in all three, my first being my clan tartan, the second being a universal (Auld Scotland), and the third a district tartan (County Cavan), and the most recent being a handsome Harris Tweed in the Taransay pattern by our own Paul Henry. A glowing review of which I still owe the Rabble.

As you can see from the first picture, the tweed is chock full of wonderful colors brown, burgandy, blue, yellow, green and a few shades in between .

Any would serve you fine, but the tartan kilt is the most universally recognized outwith Scotland as a true kilt (if that is at all important to you).

    Best luck with your choices!

Brooke, who is that strange person next to you wearing, of all things, p@nts. I would not have thought you associated with that type.

I'm not sure who he is Phil. I thought that his blue shirt and pants helped to bring out the blue flecks in the tweed, so I asked him to stand next to me for the photo. Apparently, his name is Hoby

District and "avocation" tartans (firefighter, the tartans associated with various military branches, etc.) can be an excellent choice. It gives the wearer more of a connection to the tartan. For example, Bob really likes his Leatherneck kilt.

There are also tartans associated with non-Celtic family background -- I think the German Heritage has been mentioned -- I have a length of the elusive Dutch Friendship waiting to go under the needle one of these days. . .

Thanks for the opinions guys, I'll pass this thread on to my friend. It seems that tartan is the preferred choice. I had suggested solids and patterned tweed because I have been interested in them lately. I think that they are a great way to be traditional, and the option to go with anything other than tartan often gets overlooked. Tartan certainly identifies the garment as a kilt, but a nice patterned tweed or solid can be quite attractive as well. MacMillans son demonstrates that with his Harris Tweed kilt (very sharp.) Thank you for the photo.

    Cheers,

    Nick
