Be careful, making sporrans can be addictive, I am onto my 5th one.

What weight leather do you guys tend to use? I can't decide if I want thick and sturdy or more supple...having not built one yet I'm not sure what works best...I guess some of it depends how dressy or casual the whole unit will be...

It does kind of depend on the purpose and look desired. I have made 5 sporrans. The was from 4-5 oz The second was the same. I decided to try something new and made it two sided. It was a bit of a failure until I lined the sides with a small piece of metal.

and my last was a combination of 4-5 oz leather front and back but suede on the sides so it was sturdy but with some give
I made 2 for my sons out of suede

Heh, yeah I have a couple piles of scrap leather that started out good but became disasters before I got finished - looks like you recovered nicely! I love your bears..I've only had leather tools for a month now and my daughter and wife have already put in their orders for purses and tablet covers and such - and they want peacocks and and dragons! Haven;t they seen the stuff I've done so far? lol, well, I won't tell them but I don't mind making theirs first - gives me extra practice before making my own lol...thanks for the pics and info!

They really are addictive. For the first go around, those look great, Cole. While I've made several rather fancy sporrans, I find I usually reach for my more utilitarian prototypes for most events I attend.

Next time you are out and about look for discarded leather furniture that's what I use and you will be surprised at what you can accomplish by recycling. The only down fall is that furniture leather tends to chrome tanned rather than veg. tanned so tooling won't take. But still it's free leather.

As you can see from most of the sporrans that I've made for myself......I like plain and simple.
