If given the choice, I would go for lightweight every time - in fact the lighter the better. Far more versatile.
I have a beautiful Melton wool waistcoat, that I can only (comfortably) wear outdoors in the depths of winter. Whereas I have a very lightweight one that can be worn on most warm days.
