The Argyll jacket bests serves that purpose (for me, anyway). You can wear it to a Burn's dinner or a wedding with a white shirt, vest, and bow tie, or dress it down - no vest, non-white shirt (eg tattersall), standard tie, or even no tie at all. For maximum versatility across a range of formality, black is probably the optimal color.
