Fraser & Kirkbright closing-up
Just got an email, yesterday, from Gordon Kirkbright, informing me that my favourite source for wool tartan (kilt cloth), Fraser & Kirkbright Weaving Co. , is no longer going to be manufacturing wool tartan cloth, in Canada.
There are still some fabrics for sale, on the website. [ http://wooltartan.com/ ]
As of Sept 1, 2013 Gordon will be starting a new venture, GK textiles, importing tartans, and other fabrics, produced in Scotland, to their specs.
It was a shock, to me, to be losing my favourite ( and lest expensive) source of 100% wool tartan, kilt cloth. Now my kilt addiction is going to cost a lot more
Good luck in your new endevour, Gordon.

Yes, I had heard that. Sad for BC, hopefully a good move for Gordon.

I hope everyone understands that there is more to this story.
It is not as sad a tale as it first appears. I will be inviting Gordon to come and tell us about this new venture as soon as he returns from Scotland.
I think our members are going to like what he has to say.

Looking forward to Chapter 2 in the story....

I JUST visited the website and saw the new layout. I completely missed this development until now. I hope Chapter Two is a good chapter!
I note that they are still doing custom weaving of tartan, with minimums in the 30 meter range.

Hmm...this makes me very interested. I wonder if a special run of 16oz Chattan (weathered maybe?) might be in "order." I know that many chaps here are fond of that sett.

Yes, I just got a note from Gordon this morning in response to a note I sent him yesterday congratulating him on the new venture. I commented on his background on the new website, mentioning the fine Clan Colquhoun Tartan he used. Well done Gordon! We look forward for him to join us here at XMTS Steve...thank you for inviting him.....

This is exciting. I had pleasant experiences the few times I've purchased cloth from F&K. Service and shipping were first rate. Looking forward to seeing more from G.K.

Best wishes to Gordon Kirkbright. I hope the new venture prospers, and I look forward to reading more about it.
EPITAPH: Decades from now, no one will know what my bank balance looked like, it won't matter to anyone what kind of car I drove, nor will anyone care what sort of house I lived in. But the world will be a different place, because I did something so mind bafflingly eccentric that my ruins have become a tourist attraction.
