Some pictures from Newcastle NSW dating from the late 1890's

HI all,

I was just feeding my genealogical addiction when I came across these beautiful photos taken in 1896 through 1898 in Newcastle NSW. I thought they were worth sharing.

It is the facial hair that I found most striking. Some of those moustaches are very fine indeed and, in my view, suit the kilt wearers admirably. Not so sure about the preponderance of bowler hats...

Sorry you're having troubles Tobus. It's working for me, and I am at sea on a merchant ship in the middle of the Pacific Ocean! May I suggest googling (or internet search engine of choice) "Ralph Snowball collection" and see how you go. The collection is about 1000 photos and the Highland gathering ones are on page 7. I also recommend viewing them in "original" size. Each pic is about 1mb, but the scans are very high quality and they really come to life when you can zoom in and see all the details of faces, costume and moustaches!
