New donnie wyvern creation: Sea bass sporran

Here is a sporran that I commissioned Donnie to make for me. I gave him the sea bass leather and the tooth and vague constraints. The rest is all him and he did a wonderful job. He mentioned he had never worked with the materiel before and was not sure how suitable it would be but indeed was pleasantly surprised. I as happy as could be with it.

Very nice. I wonder what other fish might be appropriate for a sporran.

That's a beauty and so distinctive. Another excellent sporran from Donnie. We are so lucky on this forum to have not one but two in Donnie and Scott of the best sporran makers in the world as members of this forum.

I should add what a pleasure he is to work with.

That looks so cool! I like what he did with the top leather. Looks hammered.
Is the sea bass dyed and if so, what color was it originally?

Seabass, carp, and salmon are available sueded or glazed and in many colors. I ordered sueded black and delivered it straight to Donnie. I am dreaming up another in glazed black (the whole sporran in black). I about 20+ years ago had a pair of Tony Llama boots in brown sueded sea bass. They were beautiful.

I always though eel or stingray would look great, the texture and the way light refracts off stingray skin is cool.

I love me a sporran thread! It's weird synchronicity - I literally just got through conversing with my kilt maker asking if she would sell me some scraps of Buchanan plaid as I wanted to use it for the lining on a sporran I plan to make. She said there should be some pretty usable strips after making my kilt (mine is not extra long) and I could have them and she would look in her scrap pile for previous Buchanan jobs and if anything there looked good she'd send them along too.

And then I pop in here and see this at the top of the list and get inspired anew. Beautiful work and way cool idea. I keep eyeballing the stingray strips at my local Tandy outlet...Ideas are piling up in my head faster than my skills are improving but at least I have plenty to work towards.
