Respect for the kilt
Saturday night we went to a Sri Lankan 'dinner dance' with a 'professional' band. It was supposed to be a mixture of some traditional music, some modern, some baila, basically something for everyone, inlcuding the non-Sinhalese guy at the front...
The 'band' (one keyboard player and two singers) took TWO HOURS to set up and were still fiddling with the equipment 2 hours after they'd actually started.
The whole event was in Sinhalese with not one word of English spoken.
At the end, I had quite a few rather embarrassed people (including one of the dancers they'd hired) come up and apologise to me, and say that even they were not impressed and even they were bored, but also to thank me for wearing my kilt.
A lot of the people there belong to the main organisation, which is far more cosmopolitan, which has a New Year Blessing on the first and they all asked me to attend, and 'please wear your fabulous kilt'.
Needless to say, Splash will not be getting any more ticket sales from me, but I will be going on the 1st for the blessing, making some Sri Lankan food for all to enjoy, and putting on the plaid. Hey, that almost sounds like a song...
