I have a pair of silver, shield-shaped links with my arms engraved on them along with some gold links that belonged to my grandfather, and several pair of knotted silk links (red and white-- my livery colours, and a pair that are black and yellow, the livery colours of my chief). Depending on my mood, I'll wear whatever catches my fancy as I'm dressing. The most subtle option is to have your cuff links match your shirt studs, and there is nothing wrong with that, either.

What I would suggest is that one avoid gaudy, or overly large, "Las Vegas" style cuff links and stick with something understated.
A big plus one here!
