Greetings, Hugh. Welcome to the Rabble from a fellow wearer of the Lamont tartan. I echo Steve's comments above. I wear French cuffs with a suit all the time. Usually when in a blazer and slacks I will wear a buttoned cuff, as I feel a blazer is a more casual look. That being said, the kilt perhaps kicks it up a notch. I think you would be fine in a charcoal tweed jacket and French cuffs. Since the event is themed, I think the read knots work. If it were not so themed I would probably suggest a silver/pewter cufflink. But that's just me. As you noted, the wearing of a tie has almost taken on a formality to it.

Thanks for the input. I'll post a picture once I'm all dressed. I had the kit on yesterday and I think it looks pretty solid. I know the standard would be to have the tie and pocket square matched, but I'm not going to wear a red tie - I just think that would look more formal than I'm shooting for. I always wear a bow tie and there's kind of an art to making it look natural and not too stuffy and formal - more professorial and bookish is how I tend to wear them.

So, I'm translating that over to highland wear and the gray tweed bow tie with the darker gray argyle jacket kind of started the outfit. With the gray kilt hose, it was getting to be a bit monochromatic and I didn't want to have that modern monochromatic look that some men do with a dark shirt.

So the red flashes, red cufflinks and this damned pocket square with the red edging was my solution to avoid the Hollywood modern monochromatic kilt look. I watched a few videos on YouTube about folding pocket squares and I think I'll be doing a two point fold. One point will show the edging and the other won't. I haven't ironed it yet, so I might switch to the three point fold if I need to.

I don't know how I missed the way the white pocket square with red edging looks like a "HELLO My Name is:" sticker. It's ridiculous, but now I'm committed to making it work.

    We will see. . .

Myself, I love french cuff shirts, and have a fair number of link sets to serve my needs. Each time I order a custom wool kilt, I make certain to order a matching set of cufflinks made from scraps of the weave. Additionally, I have a number of UK coins-cum-cufflinks that I ordered from this web site

See this thread for a little more discussion (and other links) regarding cuff links.

I have been developing a new interest in cufflinks, which up until now I have only worn with formal wear. I am not a fan of French Cuffs, but when I shop for shirts I have begun to see an interesting feature that of cuffs with both a button and a second hole so cufflinks can be worn with it or not. Up until recently, the only shirts I ever saw like this were the rental shirts at formal shops, which always seemed odd to me as they came with cufflinks.

I have found mixed opinions on wearing cufflinks with cuffs other than french, but have been considering seeing if I could get at least some of my shirts set up with that second button hole to offer the option.

Again, entirely up to you. I do have a load of cufflinks, ranging from "put in a drawer and forget" to a wonderfully elegant gold pair given to me by my then "wife to be". But, this latter pair aside, I rarely wear them because I rarely have need of a formal shirt since I retired but it does add to the "special occasion" when I do. And, of course, Australia (at least in the northern states) is much more casual than even the UK had become in recent years.

To echo Steve's point on the wearing of jackets, when I was growing up in the late 40s and 50s, many men in the UK would feel improperly dressed if they were not wearing a jacket and tie (and often a waistcoat too) indoors at home, never mind outside! If you like the old black and white UK movies of the time, you'll see what I mean.
    Regards, Sav.

I have a pair of silver, shield-shaped links with my arms engraved on them along with some gold links that belonged to my grandfather, and several pair of knotted silk links (red and white-- my livery colours, and a pair that are black and yellow, the livery colours of my chief). Depending on my mood, I'll wear whatever catches my fancy as I'm dressing. The most subtle option is to have your cuff links match your shirt studs, and there is nothing wrong with that, either.

What I would suggest is that one avoid gaudy, or overly large, "Las Vegas" style cuff links and stick with something understated.
    A big plus one here!

Ah, thanks. I figured I was being a newbie and asking a question that had already been addressed.
I don't feel too bad since it was in a "custom shirt" thread and not a "cufflinks" one.

Anyway, thanks for pointing me in the right direction, and also, I've appreciated your posts as a lurker, so thanks for that also.

    Happy Hogmanay!
