Someone needs to show some love for the yellow stripe, so that's my vote. The dark blue is my second choice. I agree with unixken about the lighter pleats 'round back as well. To my eye the big expanse of light blue doesn't work quite as well.

I'm with Steve in pleating to the sett with this one. To my eye, it would give the best balance.
If I were to pleat to the stripe, I'd have to go with the yellow, personally. I just have a hard time pleating to any stripe that isn't the boldest in the tartan. To me that just causes the horizontal stripes to stand out too much, whereas if the stripe in the pleating is the boldest, the horizontal stripes then complement rather than "fight" the vertical stripe.
But that's just me. Whatever appeals to you most is definitely what you should do.

I tend to be a pleat to the stripe sort of guy, myself; and like Ratspike, I am feeling the love for the yellow stripe. I do, however, agree with the OP that the tracing stripes may get lost in the taper. If that can't be avoided, then I think I will side with Steve and say go for the sett. (BUT .... I really like the stripe ).

Yellow stripe for me too. Its the one I was immediately drawn to, though that could be an age thing and the way you perceive colours as you age, yellow on dark blue being easier to see .... apparently.

Cosmetically and visually, to the non-police honored, it would probably be appealing to some ( ie - showing more yellow ), but this is a International Police tartan and the yellow, fellow X-Markers, is only meant as a honoring accent. Similar to the yellow/gold stripe on a blue set of military dress pants. Yellow should not be a primary color, in this case. Shades of blue, with red accent, represents different Law Enforcement careers. My own, police veteran, opinion in this case.....

After careful consideration I am going to pleat this to the sett. Part of this comes from something I found about the Australian Police Tartan. I know that tartan has nothing to do with the IPA but the designers of that tartan intended it to be pleated to the sett because the layout and colors have meaning. Could be the same for IPA but I have nothing to suggest it. My second choice would have been to the yellow stripe. At ¾” pleat width that would be a lot of yellow in the back. Also there are two thin light blue lines that would have disappeared in the taper on both sides of the yellow. Going to 1” pleat width would preserve those lines however.
So I had better get started.
Thanks for everyone’s input.
Mike
In case anyone is interested this is the information on the Australian Police Tartan should you come across it.
