Argyll jacket and no waistcoat. What to do?

I have a rather lovely Lovat green Argyll jacket. I've had it many years and got it for a song, and it is made from a heavy tweed of somewhat higher quality than seems to be available these days. Sadly, it didn't come with a matching waistcoat and I know I'll never get a perfectly matching one, so I'd like the rabble's advice on what sort of waistcoat might work instead.

 Thanks,

 Richard.

I'd go for something contrasting. A nice Claret, deep Olive or Pine Green, even a Brown would work nicely.

I think it looks great sans waist coat, but a brown or a tan waist coat would look sharp.

I'm still plotting my purchase of a new kilt in Johnstone Weathered, so maybe a bias-cut waistcoat purchased at the same time might be a good idea, unless you think the whole thing might be too muted?
My current kilt is Macpherson Weathered, so the red is light, but somewhat muted.

Oh, and thanks for the compliments!

The jacket looks fine without a waistcoat but if you go for one ... or several .... I would choose a strong contrast rather than a near match. Light jacket, dark waistcoat; dark jacket, light waistcoat.

If your budget is anything like mine, I'd get a dark colored waistcoat instead of the tartan. The tartan whould probably only be worn with a matching kilt, while the darker waistcoat could compliment any kilt you have. On that note I'd second the red or dark blue Sailor Rat suggested.

I agree. Also, as far as fabric choice is concerned, moleskin waistcoats look superb with tweed jackets. I like the mixture of textures with Highland day attire. If you aren't keen on having the self-coloured, plastic buttons on the moleskin waistcoat, you could swap them out for stag horn buttons that coordinate with your tweed jacket.
