Meeting politicians

I attended a meeting with some of Tasmania's prominent politicians and local dignitaries such as the city mayor tonight.

I was proud to be there kilted and have an opportunity to promote kilts.

One silly lass, as old friend I've not seen for 10 years asked me why I was wearing skirts now.

I said "it's a kilt".

later she asked why i wore dresses now.

I said "it's a kilt".

Poor lass, bit thick, i reckon.

The politicians were from a conservation party called "The Greens", while they are good with caring for the environment - I have little time for their other trendy views.

I had an opportunity to get "stuck into them".

I thought after - they will remember me as "the guy with a big mouth and a kilt".

Wearing a kilt is a way of getting noticed and remembered, for good or ill.

My thick mate was finally satisfied when I told her I was on the way to Scottish Country Dancing, she said "Oh, that explains the kilt".

I tried to explain that i dress like this all the time, but finally gave up.

Do you have any good brick walls near where you live? If so, you may find it more rewarding to talk to it instead.

The general rule seems to be that if they feel they need to ask WHY you're wearing a kilt, then you can't explain it to them.

I've had a bit of success with diverting the question. Raised eyebrows and a smile, and "Why do you ask? Do you like it?" puts things onto a different track.

Or if they're really obnoxious, say "I wore it especially to get you to notice me, and come and talk to me." Growl it, and then lick your lips.

When someone asks why I'm wearing a kilt I just say "Why not?"

I too know the feeling about all those local politician types. They usually say nice things about my kilt, but sometimes I wonder if my thoughts are being overlooked, but they are just being nice because I am in a kilt.

As you know I am co-chair of a committee with the mayor's wife as a member, so it does have its advantages to be seen getting a hug from her so the political types listen a little bit better, but I am still wondering if they listen to me or not because of that.

Also getting to know the spouses and kids beforehand does seem to help, especially if others are watching, so they can schmooze with me to get an inside track, (it ain't going to happen I don't use my friends)

Wearing a kilt does seem to get noticed , but like you said for good or bad you never know.

I also like hearing the remarks of others in attendance who do not know me, that sometimes is priceless with hearing their remarks. One of my favorites that seems to come up often is are you from Scotland?
