Here in the U.S. our society concerns itself far less with which family you claim a link to (outside of the extreme example of the post-Civil War Hatfields and McCoys of Kentucky and West Virginia.) Particularly when you discuss it with younger people.

But there are those in Scotland and elsewhere, for whom those ties mean a great deal. Out of respect for them, my own ancestors, and others for whom such ties are important, I prefer it be generally understood that "it matters" to some.

The following is from Black: The Surnames of Scotland:
    Profet, Profat, Profeit.
William Propheta was charter witness in Aberdeen in 1281 and John Profite was admitted burgess of the same burgh, 1446. Thom Profit appears as "mair of the quarter of Brechin" and sheriff-depute of Forfar in 1473. Alexander Perfat in Dundee was charged with aiding the English in 1552.

Yep. The Hasty family is a sept of Clan Graham, and I wear that tartan proudly. I would never consider wearing the tartan of another clan. Similarly, as a Marine veteran, I have the right to wear the USMC tartan with equal pride. Obviously, I can't keep anyone from wearing either tartan, and for me to even attempt to do so would be ridiculous. However, if an individual chooses to wear either one without having a connection, I would expect that they would do so respectfully. Both tartans have great meaning to me, and anyone I saw dishonoring either of them would have to answer to me for their actions. If you're going to act the fool, wear one of the fashion "tartans", and leave my heritage alone.

In 2002 The Wales Tartan Center designed a Tartan for the family names - Probart, Probert, Probyn, Prodger, Propert, Prophet, Robert, Roberts, Robin, Roblin, Roppert- They call the Tartan Roberts.
It is registered with The Scottish Tartans Authority as #5762.
