We're a little more formal here. Wranglers and shirts that are only worn for nice occasions, along with a nice pair of boots. The people here are hard working ranchers and don't really have a need for suits (with the exception of church.) The only time kilts are seen is the Burns Dinner in the town 45 minutes north. I'm kilted one to two times a week, and the locals don't pay attention to me anymore, it's the tourists who'll stop me to talk.

Ditto here in SoCal! Zorries and Aloha shirts are seen at any occasion... even weddings and funerals. LOL 'mostly buttoned' ... what is it with these guys?
Really dressing up is a black sports coat worn over a plain black t-shirt, blue jeans, and either Cowboy boots, Converse Hightops, or Vans. Oh, and sunglasses even though it's indoors at night. Common to see such even at Black Tie events.

And here in the remote Canyonlands I'd be the only one who cared. The tourists sharing the restaurant with me, and the locals, would likely be wearing tank tops, shorts, and flip-flops.
I do however appreciate the suggestions of folks living where it would make a difference - so I can learn should I be in a part of the world where such things are important.

Agree to all of the above. To my experience, wearing a kilt with a button-up collared shirt, turtle neck, sweater, etc. would be completely appropriate for dinner.

lol, when you work that hard on a tan, folks need to see it! (I've lived here in Orlando for 30+ years and am likely as pale as my Loch Lomond ancestors - I can count on 1 hand the number of times I've been to the beach..If I didn't burn so easily I'd go a lot more.)
but I do count among my many pairs of shoes a nice pair of Lucchese Ostrich skin cowboy boots and a well-worn (which is the right kind of worn for proper concert attire) Converse high-tops. lol,I freely admit I feel more dressed up in my boots. (I am a native Floridian but grew up in Texas before moving back here).
If I could figure out a way to get Buchanan tartan on a pair of converse, I'd wear them a lot.

Well, more like this only Buchanan:
I love my chucks but as far as I know, COnverse doesn't do special orders - or, if they do, I suspect it would be out of my price range.

The only times I ever see black tie in a restaurant (even a high end one) is when the high school prom goers are eating before the prom.

You'll look smashing in your tweed Argyll, and I'm sure you'll be much better dressed than most!
Cheers, mate. Hope you had a wonderful Valentine's Day dinner.

I understand the need for the Argyle and Prince Charlie, but in my own opinion, there is nothing more classic and sharp than the tweed, in any color. They will always be my cost of choice. Just saying....
