The very common misuse of 'us' instead of 'we.' Direct object vs. subject and all that...Now I'm going to stop typing before I make a missteak that will invalidate my high-horsery.

    Missteak?! Damn.

I see phrases here all the time that sound odd to me, though they are not necessarily incorrect. It's actually very interesting to see the regional differences in our common language, and I enjoy the exposure to it.

One silly example is that I've always heard the phrase "to each his own", but many here from the UK tend to express it as "each to his own". It means the same thing, but the inversion of the first two words gives it a strange sound to my American ears (or to my American eyes, as it were).

It's all good stuff, though, as long as we understand what each other is saying. Unfortunately, as we have all seen, there are differences that sometimes lead to misinterpretation.

Mark: Excellent choice. I find this entire thread historical. Oops! I meant "histerical".

PS: It's good to see LitTrog back from an apparently self-induced coma.
I changed my signature. The old one was too ridiculous.

Of all the things I've ever been accused of, not making sense is one of them.
Just a few days ago I was wondering where LitTrog was. I still don't know, but I see he's stopped by here.

Every time one of these discussions pop up I'm reminded of a rather silly track sponsored by Macmillan Education featuring Professor Elemental (a personal favorite of mine)
which illustrates some of the differences between NA English and UK English.

Close, Mook--my recent pause was much more a comma than a coma, except those times when I found my head up a colon...usually my own, of course.
