PDX folks, wanna learn how to make a kilt?

I'd like to preface this by saying that this is not a formal, intensive, workshop and I DO NOT mean for this to compete with Kilt Kamp!

Okay, so. I've learned a lot from the hivemind here on xmarks and elsewhere. So many people have given so much of their experience and expertise to further the craft of kiltmaking, and I think paying it forward when you get the chance is a fine way to go through life. To that end, I'd like to see if there are a few local guys (or gals) here in the PDX/Vancouver area who'd like to learn how to make a modern/utility/cargo type kilt for themselves.

I was thinking we could get together over a weekend or two and take the process from beginning to end. Choosing fabric, how to take measurements, laying the thing out and finally, sewing it up. I'll explain how I do things and provide all the guidance and help you need, but your kilt will be 100% yours when it's done.

I have a tiny workspace so I can only accommodate one person. If someone with a bit more space would be willing to host us then I think 3-4 people would be totally doable if we can get enough machines to go around. I have two, possibly three, sewing machines and a serger available for use. I also have most of the random supplies like chalk, scissors and cutting stuff, velcro, interfacing and all that. You'd be responsible for your fabric and thread.

Any takers? Again, this is not a workshop, there is no fee paid to me, and I do not want to take anything away from Kilt Kamp. It's low key, friends hanging out and sewing some cool stuff. I'll be happy to talk details on Tuesday at kilt night, or just reply here, and we can start making plans.

Have you thought about coming across the water during Kilt Kamp? We could do a sort of Guest lecturer thing.

Bob, I'm on board, if I can fit it into my schedule and know far enough in advance to schedule the day off.......

I was eyeballing the dates but weddings keep me super busy from summer through early fall. I don't think I can make it work this year. It's a shame, because I'd love to attend and it would be a FABULOUS motorcycle road trip.

Done. How far in advance do you need to schedule your days off? I'd imagine we'll need two sessions for everyone to finish their kilts so we don't have to pull a marathon in one sitting. You and I can always get together on our own to finish up if we need to.

Steve, I forgot Kamp runs during the week. I also forget that Victoria is so close. Perhaps I can make this happen after all. I'll look at my schedule and confer with my wife, and PM you if it appears doable.

I'd be very interested in attending as an observer, taking notes, listening, learning, etc. Would that be possible if it didn't interfere with those who were actually sewing there during the class?
Studies have shown that women who gain a few pounds live longer than men who mention it.

It's the airport code for Portland International Airport but it's also used as shorthand for people too lazy to type or write Portland when referencing the name of the city. I find it can be a handy way to avoid confusion with that other Portland as well.
