I am looking for the name of the garment worn under the kilt that is made of the tartan material. I know that there is an underwear like garment, similar to boxers, that can be worn but I cannot for the life of me remember the name of the garment.

Any help would be appreciated.

In common parlance they were just called "trews" or, sometimes, "undertrews"

They were universally supplied with all kilts until WW2 when clothing rationing killed them off.
