As long as you remember that not all Scots were, or are, part of a Highland Clan.
The majority of the population of Scots lived and still live in the cities and the Lowlands. These people would not have felt a connection to the Highland Clans. And prior to the Romance period would not have had Tartans and would not have worn kilts.
It was only recently, or since the early 1800's, that it became popular to try to find a connection to a Highland Clan.
