If you would like a much more realistic approach to what a great kilt was - on youtube - type "Wool Blanket" into the search window.

Hundreds of videos showing a practical, easy to put on, garment that we have plenty of historical evidence for.

Alternately do a google search for "matchcoat".

This calls for a quiz. The whole nine yards means:

A. The length of fabric used in a great kilt.

B. The yardage required to make a complete bespoke man's suit, trousers, jacket and waistcoat.

C. The length of a web machine gun belt that could be loaded into a World War One fighter plane.

D. All of the above (are total BS.)

The video was intended to be humorous. It came up during a conversation where my son was bemoaning no longer having a great kilt. He was giving a rather funny description of donning a great kilt that involved folding up a picnic blanket. The "fold the pleats, slide the belt under" technique came up. Perhaps we had all been visiting with the quaich too much.

Well, yes, I laughed all the way through the video.

Throughout the entire video only one kept springing to mind.

What is the first thing you have to do when you wake up in the morning? Yep!

Would you think your garment was practical if you had to go through all of that work just to run outside to the outhouse? It is no wonder we have no historical documentation of "The whole nine yard great kilt". The guy tried it one time and said, "no way, never again!", and it disappeared from history, to be remembered only by those who still haven't stopped laughing.
