The other pieces are all wonderful, I especially like the dirk pin. I too love the Caringorm stones however I do understand why they are not being mined any longer.

They may still be mined in some places of Scotland, in particular for local artisans/silversmiths, who have commissioners that request genuine Cairngorm stone for their Highland accessories. However, the mass produced imitation Cairngorm, usually made of coloured resin, is far more accessible. If I wear any stone, whether it's in the hilt of a sgian dubh and dirk, a kilt pin, or round buttons on a doublet, Cairngorm is definitely my preferred stone of choice. It's a very traditional choice, as well as colour for Highland evening attire. The late Clan Macpherson Chieftain, Euan Macpherson of Glentruim, had a Montrose style doublet with each button being of (round) polished Cairngorm, surmounted by silver. His buttons also matched the Cairngorm on his dirk and sgian dubh. Very smart indeed, and something not often seen these days.

    Cheers,

Thanks for the clarification Kyle, I never looked into that far.

Looking good Nathan. Quite a find; it definitely looks like the Clanranald ancient. My first kilt was in that tartan. Unfortunately, I've lost enough weight that it doesn't fit me any more. My new kilt is in the modern colors; my wife doesn't like the modern colors, so I just might have to get another.

It's certainly the Clanranald ancient, I'm just making an educated guess that it's House of Edgar that wove it. I have a couple in modern also and a Clan Donald generic. Are you a cousin or just fond of this particular tartan?

More of a neighbor than a cousin. The 'A' in my user name is for Allen, which is a sept of Clanranald.

No worries, Glen! I only know this, because some time ago I had inquired about having Cairngorm doublet buttons made.

Very nice bunch of acquisitions Nathan... The Kilt and pin are particularly dazzling. Most fortuitous if I may be so bold.
