I'll be starting my first X-Kilt soon. What kind of fabric did you go with? I'm wanting to do a super tough one for yard work, thinking canvas from a painters drop cloth. Any thoughts from your experience?
Burlap is pretty tough stuff, but it chafes me so.

I've made kilts from canvas and cotton duck. A good quality 10 oz canvas (The weight Carhartt's carpenter trousers are made from) works fine, if you can find one. The stuff at most fabric stores is not good quality, it's made from short yarns, and will fall apart. It's heavy enough it hangs right, but not horribly heavy. Heavier is just heavier, and less comfortable. It wrinkles like crazy, and you'll have to press it every time it's laundered (or more often), if you care at all about how it looks. A good 60%cotton 40% poly won't wrinkle, and are surprisingly durable.
