Kilt For A Week - Wore the Kilt to Work
Hey, so I'm a newbie. I never pre-emptively seeked kilt wearing as any sort of option until I heard about someone wearing a contemporary one at work. It seemed too radical to me but I still found myself intrigued. I bought and wore a solid black kilt for the first time last Saturday, and yesterday after a week in deliberation and review of dress codes, decided to take a plunge and wore it to work all day! As have my other experiences been wearing it, it was anticlimactic from what I might have imagined. Time dragged through the morning, but overall through the day, I was comfortable where most were not with heat and humidity. My favourite thing was hearing one of the 'loudest barkers' not voice a usual reluctancy to anything different, instead asking what was up with all the kilts he'd been seeing lately, haha. I said one of the others had inspired me.
My approach, aided by some advice I read around here, was to go in not bringing any attention to the kilt and to explain when someone enquired; then let those inform other inquiring minds. I had people coming by my office who knew before seeing me for the day. I didn't make any extra effort to make appearances on the shop floor or head office if I didn't need to, in other words just went about my usual business. Our receptionist only noticed at the end of the day assuming I had on athletic shorts, which would be a rarity for me in itself as I don't particularly like wearing shorts even and have never in any of my full-time working career worn anything other than trou$ers so... She asked if it was my new thing to wear all the time .
A friend offered to pay me on his word for wearing it to work. I explained that I had actually declined his dare (thinking I would never even find myself attempting such a thing) and that kilting was not a bet Perhaps being a Friday before a long weekend, it went over quite well but I did notice some having difficulty understanding "why".. Couple observations were that the jokes were kept to a minimum, probably from my list of acquired comebacks now and that people, oddly, or at least I'm not used to, seemingly stood closer to me while talking, but my guard was up so perhaps I just felt they were in my space.
Either way, all was friendly! I misread some people although I don't mind what banter may have ensued behind my back. Hope to learn more

Well done! It's good to see someone take the plunge, especially with a plain black kilt! Saves all the arguments about tartan that have been erupting here of late. Some will always fail to understand why we wear a kilt, and some will make jibes about my 'skirt' (which a kilt, kind of is...), so you have to be thick-skinned. Don't have your guard up too much though, any haters will soon lose interest. Develop your own kilting style, don't worry about 'traditional' get ups that many here try to adhere to
And post a pic of your outfit!

Good on ya for wearing the kilt to work. I wear mine on campus and at work maybe once a week. Most of the attention I receive is from ladies wishing their man would wear one, and inquiries from gents who have been interested in kilt wearing but haven't worked up the confidence to do so.
Spread the good word!

Thanks! I can't take a pic while at work due to policy but I appreciate the encouragement either way I'm halfway through workday #2 and day #5 being kilted EXCLUSIVELY. Although reactions to my unique (maybe even more so being solid coloured for identifiable purposes) clothing choice have been nothing I can't handle, I do still feel strange being without wearing p@nts but it's comfortable; I've conveyed this and a few have shown a lot of interest. My boss hasn't said a word.. I'm still working on a don't ask don't tell - my shirt and shoes are getting nearly as much attention; I am dressing better to avoid an objectionable appearance. What do you say, keep kilting on? I feel like futuristic or something, being the only one.. I don't know.

Absolutely, keep on kilting. I've been wearing kilts almost exclusively for six weeks, including to work. There have been some miserably humid days during that period and whether at work or out and about, I've been very comfortable. Kilt on.

Congrats on taking the leap. I know how you feel, I'd love to get a shot of me at work but no photos allowed here either. Kilt on!

^Had to drive across the city after work which would have been a more burdening task on another warm day, so glad I wore it again. Today was much better; yesterday was a 'what am I doing?' day. Decided to dress it down with a company T-shirt instead of a collared shirt. Shaved my head too:

It's gotta be in how you carry yourself. Had run ins with both the Sr. VPs of HR and the division I work at. It was clearly noticed, then onto other topics. My boss finally chimed in when someone who hadn't seen it yet blatantly asked "the question" - he replied without me having to, "we're not looking!" hahaha! Another gave a thumbs up to the shaved head, then I stood up to lit eyes: "What is that!?.. A KILT? I gotta have me one of those"
And so for the first time while shopping today, an employee is giving me the up and down scan look and I'm thinking like what? I'm not stealing or anything.. oh, right, the kilt! Yup, had my attention away; sure was nice to be wearing it.
