So, years and years ago, in the magazine "Threads", a woman by the name of Ann Stewart, who is as well a known kiltmaker as any, wrote an article about how to make a kilt.
1. the cover model for the article was a stunning Scottish lass....wearing a kilt.
2. in the article, Ann Stewart specifically noted that "kilts" were primarily for men, but that some women did wear them and she, herself owned one and loved it.
If ANN STEWART owns and wears a kilt, I think that kind of shutters the argument for me.
Interestingly e nough, my opinion on this subject has changed over the years. If you read the X-Kilt manual, you'll note a comment about ladies leaving the kilt for the menfolk. At this point, though, I don't much care one way or another. Make it, wear it.... what, like I'm going to stop you, somehow? sheesh.

I haven't weighed in on this subject but here goes: My opinion on this is that YES the kilt is (or was) a male garment,,, but so are (were) "pants" and many other historical articles of clothing.... If the fairer sex want to wear them, they will, and well, I admire them in what ever they choose to wear (or not wear). Both sexes look great in tartan. I'm a bit of a traditionilist and prefer women in tartan dresses and think women look either like school girls or pipe band members when wearing a kilt. But I can be persuaded other wise.... HINT = Lassies - show us your pictures and keep this great thread going!

Here is my friend Adriane, who obviously is an Athlete....as in the 4x womens world champion. Unlike most of the lasses, Adriane wears (usually) an actual traditional, knee-length wool kilt on the field.

We don't hear much from NeoKilts on X Marks any more but that doesn't mean they don't exist.

Kate (on the left) and Lacy (on the right) wearing NeoKilts...

Personally, at this point, I don't have a problem with women wearing kilts, either tartan or contemporary.
However, I quite agree that everyone has a right to their opinion.

Alan,
I am surprised. I can't recall seeing a woman competing at games in this area in anything except a kilt. I assumed it was required by the rules, as it is for men.
