Actually if you asked me if wearing the kilt would be disrespectful, (and you did ask) I would come right back at you with another question - "What is the reason you are wearing a kilt?".
This is exactly the question you will be asked.
What is your answer? Are you wearing a kilt to draw attention to yourself? Do you consider a kilt your Scottish Highland/Heritage birthright? Or perhaps you wear it to show 'I'm more Scottish than you are'.
I hope you see what I'm getting at.
It is the same sort of question such as "Why are you here participating in this run? Are you here to draw attention to yourself - or are you here to support the cause?
Let's say you wear a kilt and get noticed. Duh, of course you will get noticed. And let's say that your local newspaper or radio reporter decides to interview you. If they ask you my question. "Why are you wearing a kilt? What is your answer?
Do you go into an explanation about the kilt or your Scottish Heritage?
Or do you respond that you are here simply to support the run, the cause, for the same reason everyone else is here, but you just happen to put a kilt on this morning.
If you are going to wear a kilt to the run to bring attention to yourself then don't go to the run at all.
If you are going to the run to support the cause it does not matter what you wear.
I have seen people dressed totally in pink. From their pink runners up to their pink tights, their pink tutu, pink t-shirt, and 5' tall pink fairy wings topped off with pink hair with a pink tiara. Did they get noticed? You bet. But if asked why they are there, drawing attention in such an outfit, their answer is always. "To support the cause."
So think about your answer to the question - "Why are your here and why did you wear a kilt?"
There is your own answer to your question "Do you think wearing a kilt to a non-highland/Celtic charity event is disrespectful?

Well said, Steve.
I would add that the Susan G Komen fund has its own tartan (largely pink) registered. So wearing tartan at an event like this would not be out of place.

I have never thought of a kilt as disrespectful. The opposite really. I wore a kilt for the Relay for Life this year.

Actually, Stan, I would think anyone who wore a suit to an event like that might be seen as wanting to take the p**** out of people.
But a kilt with a T-shirt or other garb appropriate to a walk or run ought to be fine.

Mike

LOL... Good point....While i'm only 2.5 years in on my Kilting, I'm of the opinion that you just can't go wrong with a kilt.In almost any situation.
If the selection was wrong, I think that so few (non kilt wearing) people would it, that none of them would think other wise....

Thanks Rabble for the great discussion! I did wear my kilt. I just like wearing a kilt! Received nothing but compliments. It was great to participate with 6,000 others in this worthy effort. There were lots of pink tutus. Maybe next year, I will try to get the pink tartan kilt.
