To Fly Plaid or not

I got a Lamont Ancient 8yd 160z for my 1st kilt... "the best to be had". Then I got the Fly of the same cloth... I've worn the Fly to 1 wedding and I have flown the fly as a clan banner in the Parade of the Clans..
Humble opinion ..go for the kilt and waist coat

If you get more pleats in your kilt and later for some possibly daft reason, who says the two have to be an exact match anyway?

Another vote for the kilt and forget the plaid - you'll get far more use and pleasure from a better kilt.

I make my own kilts, and I started off thinking that 5 or 6 yards was an incredible amount of fabric to put into one garment - I think my first kilt was 4 and 1/2 yards. I took it apart and added another 2 yards fairly soon, and then settled on 7 to 8 yards - and for the last one I have even exceeded 8 yards.

I have met with other X Markers who have lamented their 5 to 6 yard kilts were not just that bit more, had deeper pleats, more of them or both - so I can only advise that you get the whole length of fabric made up into a kilt and not risk lamenting the shorter amount later.

Also - it seems a bit much, having got the fabric at a good price to then want to get a fly plaid out of it as well as the kilt.
